Kits? Which kit is best for me?

Many of my engine tools are offered in kits as well as individually. Why? I sell more tools that way and you get a better price. Its that simple. The kits are packaged with one thing in mind - trying to combine the tools that are usually needed for typical jobs. Below are a couple of simple graphs to help.

Belt Tensioning Tool Kit (920X Kit)

All of my tools are offered individually but I also some of them in kits:

  • This 920X Kit is shown above - this kit features the newest version of the 920X and with it, you can accurately and easily set the tension on both the cam and balance belts  Note: this kit works for all models of 924S, 944. It can also work for the 968 but does not include instructions for use with the hydraulic tensioner that is part of the 968 engine.

  • The 920X is used for both the the cam belt and the your balance belt tension and the thin wrench is needed to alter the balance belt tension (it works for all offset rollers and idlers on the engine). And a small pin wrench needed to manipulate the spring tensioner. With this kit you will NOT have to rely on the engines spring tensioner to correctly set the cam belt tension.

  • This link can tell you more about the 920X.

  • Important note: the 920X attaches to the cam belt separator bar. Some of the early cars (prior to 86) did not come with the separator bar. Many cars did get upgraded to use the new pump in the course of routine maintenance. I'm not sure the older version of the water pump is even sold anymore, except perhaps to unsuspecting buyers. Occasionally one still surfaces though. If you are not sure what you have on your engine, its best to check your engine before you buy the tool. Basically that means you have to remove the upper belt cover and get a peek at your pump.  Here is a link to help you to identify the pump.

Engine Tools "Maxi Kit"

If you're a long time Porsche owner, this kit might be best for you. This kit includes the best of the engine tools that I offer in one package price. Package prices saves a few dollars and in this case includes a tough aluminum storage case to keep everything together. With these tools you can change a waterpump, install and tension both the cam and balance shaft belts and replace front engine seals and correctly set the speed sensor.

Engine Tools "Full Kit"

  • The Full Kit includes the Krikit , Roller Wrench, Combo Pin Wrench and Flywheel Lock - the basic specialty tools that you will need to remove/replace your water pump, replace your front engine seals and replace your timing/balance belts. This kit is very popular with the budget minded enthusiast. Note: the Krikit is only useful on 83-86 944 and 924S. Please read my page for help with using and the limitations of the Krikit.

More specifics on the tools:

  • Krikit KR-1 Belt Tension Tester - This tool can be used to confirm tension on all of the 944 & 951 cam belts (83 thru 86) models only. It is used by many Porsche enthusiasts as  an alternative to Porsche's tool P9201.

  • 9244 Roller Wrench - This thin wrench (27 mm)  is a substitute for Porsche's flat wrench P9244 and is needed to set the cam and balance belt tension. This is a specially designed thin-wrench and will fit the more commonly seen 27 mm rollers. It and the other hand tools seen here are black oxide coated and sealed with a Mil-Std metal coating - this same process is used by many gun makers. Note: Please compare this wrench closely to that of my competitor's. Mine are NOT re-cut bicycle wrenches - the offset and thickness are critical to ease of use. Also, some of the very early models of the 944 used a 24mm roller, for the most part these smaller rollers have disappeared but occasionally one turns up.

  • 9200 Combo Pin Wrench - this tool is needed to remove and install the balance shaft gears. This wrench (sometimes known as a "locking bar") is made of solid steel, and features welded stainless steel pins. This tool is the only available here, see this page for more info.

  • Flywheel Lock - Removing and installing the crankshaft bolt & lower pulleys/cogs can be impossible without a flywheel lock. This tools is fit and strength tested to over 200 ft-lbs and includes the needed hardware (to be used with your starter's mounting bolts). This lock is not compatible with 968s that have the dual mass flywheel/clutch but will work for 968 with the auto trans.

Here is a view of which tools are used on the different areas of the engine. Note this image is typical of the 86 and older models. 87 and newer engines are slightly different.
