Flywheel Lock (944, 944S, 944S2, 951, 968-auto, 924S)

This tool is needed to hold the crankshaft so that the crankshaft bolt can be loosened/tightened. That bolt must be removed in order to perform much of the engine maintenance on the front of the engine. The bolt is torqued to 160 foot/pounds and can be very difficult to get loose. Unlike other cars, the 944 clutch is not strong enough to lock the crank and permit removal/install of this bolt.

Installation is straightforward: place the transmission in neutral and remove the engine's starter. Insert the lock in place of the starter and use the lock to nudge the ring gear either right or left so that the lock's mounting holes align with the starter's mounting holes. Secure the lock there with the provided hardware and the starter's mounting bolts.
